The Vincenzo De Luca Cultural Association has been active for years with artistic work in the area aimed at building an open-air museum in the historic part of the town. In 2022 presented the project A Cielo Aperto in una stanza, curated by Bianco-Valente and Pasquale Campanella, developed a new narrative cycle that highlights not only the natural environment and the historic part of the town as important elements of the site-specific artistic interventions but also the history, biographies, and memories of families as valuable elements to tell the story of the territory.
A Cielo Aperto in una stanza introduces a new way of working to foster greater community involvement by inviting six artists to engage with six families from Latronico: Veronica Bisesti, Nicola Guastamacchia, Francesca Marconi, Patrizio Raso, Apo Yaghmourian, Elena Zottola.
This project places the community at its center, engaging in a close dialogue with artists to create an immersive experience based on interpersonal relationships from which practices, projects, and works have developed, enriched by stories and testimonies where biographies, memories, and histories of these places intertwine. An artistic practice that constantly balances the private and the public, highlighting how these belong to different levels within a broader sociality from which social and anthropological elements can be derived. The artists and family members enact another form of relationship through an open space of co-creation. Thus, it is a return to the community and its people to understand their identity and cultural development as a set of co-evolving elements formed over time in the close relationship between human settlement and place.
The project developed in multiple phases, from the public presentation to the workshop, where a discussion among the artists took place regarding the various design proposals that emerged from meetings with families, also opening a space for dialogue and discussion with some citizens of Latronico.
In this final phase, the outcomes of the projects will be presented and the processes activated during this ongoing dialogue will be shared. Many issues have emerged, reflecting a coherence between the awareness of one’s work, the tools used, and the continuous and important questioning of the artistic status.
From the project Progress by Apo Yaghmourian with the Palmieri–Pirotto family, which developed from the idea of travel as a way to discover new places but also through chance or necessity. The interaction with the family highlighted feelings, memories, and recollections that take shape in the asphalt sculpture the artist built and set to sail at sea, a metaphor for the ability to reveal freedoms otherwise impossible. Yaghmourian emphasized a shared history of moving from one place to another, giving the family a photograph that will become an integral part of their story and their home.
